Clinical Rotations: Apps to Download

Often times during clinical rotations, you’ll be running around + having a handy resource on your phone can be a lifesaver! Also, the more you’re able to use them + become familiar with the apps – the quicker you’ll be able to find the information that you need.

MD Calc

The best FREE resource! Includes calculators for risk stratification, scores + equations, criteria, etc! For example, you can easily calculate maintenance fluids, Child-Pugh Score, NIH Stroke Scale, Well’s Criteria, you name it! I used this app on nearly all of my rotations, multiple times throughout the day. You’ll likely get an extra gold star if you’re able to provide one of these scores or numbers while presenting a patient.

Merck Manual

Basically a FREE alternative to Up to Date. A great resource to have on hand + filled with so much information. Includes: videos, so many resources like clinical calculators, figures + 3D models, case studies, etc.

Up to Date

The holy grail – filled with so much valuable information. The only downside: it’s expensive. Some schools + hospitals provide it for free.

Epocrates

My FREE go-to app for medications + prescribing. It includes everything from indications + appropriate dosing, adverse reactions, contraindications, + even pictures of the pills. They also have a drug interaction checker if you’d like to upload your patients meds!

Medscape

I liked this app to scroll through recent news articles in medicine. You’re able to select categories or specialties, for example: Medical Student. It also has some added features such as clinical calculators + drug interaction checker.

USPSTF Prevention TaskForce (for FM)

This app provides a quick way to see recommendations for your patient by the USPSTF TaskForce by entering their generic information (age, gender).

ACOG (for OB)

I liked using the expected due date calculator but the ACOG app is filled with great resources for your OB rotation!
